Gonio fortress
A Roman garrison stood here before Batumi existed: the walls of Apsaros are almost two thousand years old.
Gonio-Apsaros is Georgia's oldest fortress: the Romans raised it in the 1st century to control the road into Colchis; Byzantines and Ottomans built on after them. The rectangle of walls survives complete — walk the perimeter and picture the legionary camp inside.
Within are excavations, a small museum and the shade of orange trees; legend places the grave of the apostle Matthias here. It's fifteen minutes from the city, with Kvariati and Sarpi further down the same road.
